We understand that most people want to keep up with updates to their server types, especially when those updates include bug fixes, new features, etc. We also understand that it can be difficult to keep up with server maintenance sometimes, so we've added this guide to our Help Center to try and make this part a little easier.

Before you proceed...

Updates can be scary. If you have precious content on your server, you plan to update to a higher version then go back, and/or you're playing on experimental versions (such as snapshots)... You should strongly considering backing up your server first.

Any files that you consider important should be included in the backup, such as your world(s), player data, plugin configs, etc. Be sure to download the backup file locally.

Why do I need to backup my server? Don't you do that for me?

We do, several times a day. However, taking your own backup of your own important files at a specific time and ensuring that you have those files on your own PC gives you piece of mind in case anything happens after you update.

Can you help me take a backup?
We can prepare a download link for you from one of our most recent backups, but it won't be a live backup. The download link would be active for up to 30 days, however.

Trying to update a Bedrock or Pocket Mine server?

Currently, only PocketMine servers will have access to the server type selector. However, any customer may reach out to our team if you'd like to make a change to your server type and/or version at any time.

Please note that PocketMine-MP, as well as most other community-made software projects, may not offer the most up-to-date versions/features as Bedrock Alpha Server. If you are currently on our PocketMine platform and wish to switch, please reach out to our team.

How do I update my server type in Prisma?

Luckily, updating your server is a very easy process – just follow the steps below!

  1. Make sure you're logged into Prisma and looking at the right server's dashboard.
  2. Stop your server; make sure it's fully stopped before you proceed!
  3. On the right-side of the panel, access the Server Type selector by selecting the Change button.
  4. As you should only be updated to a new version of your existing server type (e.g. the latest version of Paper), do not modify the server source or server package.
  5. Adjust the Version  dropdown to whichever version you wish to swap to. These should be in order, so the (Latest/Recommended) will be found at the top.
  6. Once you've selected your desired version, select the Continue button then Install.
  7.  Wait for the installation to fully complete before making any changes.
  8. Once the installation is complete, feel free to make any desired changes to your server, then start your server when ready.

Can I change my server type (source/package) altogether?

Of course! If you do this, just keep in mind that most server types aren't cross-compatible with worlds and Minecraft worlds are typically not backwards-compatible when it comes to versions. If you're swapping modpacks, going to an older version of Minecraft, and/or going from modded to non-modded, you'll want to create a new world first.

Can I use a custom JAR / custom PHAR?

Yes! We have a guide to help with custom installs here.

Please be sure to include details on what server type (and version) you're trying to install, what error(s) you came across when trying to update, and what step(s) you got stuck on. This information will help our team so we know what you've already tried and where the process may be failing.
